Adding Sound and Speech Bubbles micro-lesson

Do you struggle with balancing your kids’ screen time with their education? Say hello to 1Question, the app that solves this problem with a fun twist! Our app lets your child earn screen time minutes in their favourite apps by watching educational videos and correctly answering quiz questions. And the best part? You get to decide which apps to lock behind learning using 1Question.

Learning time

Kids learn by watching short, engaging video lessons.

Coding isn’t only about making things move. Sometimes we want to have sound or change the image slightly. Last time, we solved the problem with the sequence of commands with the cat and the fish. Let's see how we can use speech bubbles or record sound to make the animation more interesting. If we want to add a speech bubble or even a thought bubble, this comes under Looks because it comes up as an image on the screen rather than a sound that we can hear. So, I can choose the Say Hello! for two seconds command to give it a set amount of time that it will come up for. We can then change the text, so it says what we want it to, “Oh look! A fish! Yum!” We can also go to the Sound tab to add prerecorded sounds or record our own. I'm going to choose the Play Sound Until Done command and choose where I want it to go. I can then click on the drop-down menu and choose Record. I can then record my own sound. I'm going to record this for the fish, “Please don't eat me!” We then go back to code and press on the drop-down menu again and select recording1. Let's see if our speech bubble and sound work. “Please don't eat me!” Looks good. Head on over to scratch.mit.edu to have a go at it and add some of your own speech bubbles and sounds.
