Learning time

Fungi are a type of microorganism. Micro, meaning very small, and organism, meaning living thing. Most fungi share many characteristics as plants. They are, in fact, their own category of living thing. There are many different types of fungi including the common baker’s yeast and the mushrooms that you might see at the supermarket. Mushrooms begin their lives as fungal spores which are tiny particles. These then grow into a collection of roots underground. Fungi feed on dead and decaying matter such as other plants. Now, let’s look at an unusual type of fungi: these glow in the dark mushrooms. These mushrooms are bioluminescent, which means that they glow in the dark. These bioluminescent mushrooms were a mystery to scientists until they realized that the glow of the mushrooms help to attract insects and spread the spores of the mushroom.
