The African elephant is a mammal that is found in 23 countries across Africa including Botswana, Zambia, and Tanzania. Like all mammals, this animal has a layer of hair on its body and is warm-blooded, meaning it can create its own body heat. Like all elephants, the African elephant has a large trunk which it uses for multiple purposes including foraging, drinking, and carrying food to its mouth. The African elephant is larger than the Asian and Indian elephant and can be recognized by its distinctively large ears. In addition to being the largest of its kind, the African elephant is the largest land animal currently in existence with males weighing up to 6,000 kilograms and up to 4 meters tall shoulder to toe. Elephants are herbivores which means that they only eat plants. The African elephant has a diet of grass, leaves, fruit and roots.
