Learning time
Kids learn by watching short, engaging video lessons.
Fungi is a living thing that is neither plant nor animal. Some common fungi include yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. Fungi can grow on land or in water, but like areas that are damp. They do not grow so well in very hot, dry, or cold areas. Although some fungi have been found in the Arctic and Antarctic. There are thought to be around 50,000 known species of fungi. Fungi grow by feeding on other organisms. Some on dead animal or plant material, and these are known as saprophytes. Some on living plants or animals, and these are known as parasites. They all put chemicals into what they are growing on and this digests it. It is then taken in or absorbed by the fungi. Many fungi reproduce by using spores that are transported by things like wind, insects, and water from the fungus to other damp places where they can grow. Some fungi can be eaten like certain types of mushrooms. Also, some yeasts are used in bread making and beer production. Some medicines such as antibiotics come from fungi. Some fungi can destroy things like mold on food. Certain fungi can be poisonous if eaten such as the death cap and panther cap mushrooms.
