Learning time

Kids learn by watching short, engaging video lessons.

A mammal is a kind of animal but not all animals are mammals. There are certain characteristics that animals must have to be a mammal linked to how their bodies work. Most mammals give birth to live young with the young feeding on their mother's milk. There are, however, exceptions to this. One of them being the platypus which is a mammal but actually lays eggs. Mammals are warm-blooded and they control their body temperatures by doing things like sweating, shivering, or even panting. Mammals have hair or fur to help control their body temperature and this can look different depending on the mammal. Even dolphin calves are born with hair which falls off as they get older. Mammals have backbones and bony skeletons, and they look different depending on the mammal. Animals with backbones are called vertebrates. Mammals also usually have large brains compared to their body size. Mammals move in different ways, some on two legs, some on four, some even fly like bats or have flippers and swim like dolphins and whales. There are over 5,000 known mammal species on earth.
