Have you ever had a really big task to tackle? Maybe it was an important test or mom and dad asked you to clean your entire room? When faced with a large task like this, it's easy to feel overwhelmed or unsure of where to start. But people with a growth mindset know that when you have a big job, it's best to start small. First, break down your large task into smaller pieces. Ask yourself, “What small steps will help me reach my goal?” For example, if my goal is to clean my room, my small steps might be make the bed, put away clothes, and put away toys. You might find it helpful to write these down almost like a checklist. Next, choose one to complete right away. Don't put it off. Trust me, the sooner you get started, the better you will feel. Once you've completed the first part, check in with yourself. Ask, “How did it go?” and, “Do I need a break?” or, “Can I keep going?” If you need a break, take it. Most people find that once they get started, they get into a groove. Tell yourself, “I can do this,” and remember that all that hard work is helping to grow your brain. If you're trying to do big things, taking small steps will take you far.
